Five of us met on November 11th at Jim Connolly's shop. We met our new chapter member, Luke Taylor, and a guest, Charlie Hudson. During the technical portion of the meeting we discussed different types of tuning hammers and a Steinway D with tuning stability problems in one section.

Jim Connolly gave a two-part program. In the first part, titled “How Not To Burn Out,” he discussed ways we can keep interest and enthusiasm for our work strong even after decades of doing the same thing over and over again. Boredom will have an adverse impact on the quality of our work, so he suggested a few simple changes that can add variety to our work. His tips included trying a new temperament, tuning with the opposite hand, not using temperament strips, doing two fast passes instead of one slow one, refusing to work on pianos you don't like, and taking a day off tuning to catch up on shop work.

In the second part of the program Jim talked about his experience working with John DuBois at the Music Academy of the West over the summer. He discussed what can be learned by working on the same piano over and over again and by having a colleague close at hand to consult with. He also pointed out that good pianists don't always understand their instrument very well. We can help them by doing a little teaching every time we work on a piano for them. He also explained how humidity affects pianos near the ocean.

The meeting adjourned at 9:05 pm.

Our holiday party will be held at Gary Hammond's home on Saturday, December 21 from 3:00 pm until about 5:30. This is a week later than the date we had tentatively selected at our meeting. We will have a potluck dinner. Please contact Jim Connolly to let him know what you would like to bring.
