May Meeting: (4th Monday)
Date: Monday, May, 25, 2015
Time: 7:00 pm
Location: Kim's Piano
10200 Beach Blvd., Stanton, CA 90680
(714) 828-1000

Let's see what we can do to get a good turnout for the May meeting. It will be time for elections and we want to make sure that we have significant numbers for a substantial vote. The slate of nominees is as follows:

President - David Vanderlip
Vice President - David Stoneman
Secretary - Steve Blasyak
Treasurer - Diane Vehoski

The above slate was accepted after nominations were voted closed at the April meeting. Come on in as we need a quorum to make next year's officers official.

The April meeting had a significant turnout, and we were treated by our old hosts, Keyboard Concepts, in their new location in Fountain Valley. Yes, they have been there for nearly two years, but it takes time to settle in; and hosting a meeting is a responsibility not to be taken for granted. The near four feet of submarine sandwich accompanied by soda and chips made for a jovial get together.

The presentation was given at the suggestion of Yamaha Corporation. As the new Avant Grand hybrid piano models begin to make their way into the public realm, technicians are going to need to know the dismantle, cleaning, and repair procedures for these very different devices. Greg Frank and Ryan Maas were our guides on the intricacies of working on the model N3 at their disposal. Thank you, gentlemen, for your expert demonstration.

Please be on hand this month as internationally renowned Kawai expert, Don Mannino, walks us through a presentation that he explains will be nothing you're likely to have seen before. In his presentation, “Shigeru Kawai Concert Preparation,” Don will demonstrate and discuss Shigeru Kawai EX concert piano preparation. Many aspects of the technician's work for careful concert preparation will be covered, including working with the pianos, positioning the piano on stage for the best sound, plus string voicing, refining action performance to meet specific pianists’ needs, and hammer voicing techniques which build sustain, power and clarity. Also to be covered will be working with the pianists, which can be as much an art as fine voicing! This will be a rare chance to hear Don present this class where he will provide insights and service tips that we can apply to our everyday piano work as well as concert situations.

See you there.

NOTE: The Southern California Area Examination Board will be holding exams the weekend of June 6th & 7th. For detailed information, please see the ad above and contact Carl Lieberman at
