SANTA BARBARA CHAPTER
November Meeting: (2nd Monday)
Date: Monday, November 14, 2016
Time: 7:00 pm
Location: Gary Hammond’s Home
171 Gorrion Ave.
At the Santa Barbara Chapter's October meeting, our Technical Session included sharing and discussions about polishing and coating brass, great results achieved from extensive voicing to a Hamburg Steinway, converting brass rail actions to regular wood flanges, making improvements to a factory hammer job when replacing hammers, and getting rid of buzzes in bass strings.
We also found our notoriously missing by-laws, which have been re-typed and distributed to the members. We will review and update them as needed at a future meeting.
For our program, we explored PitchLocks on a Kohler & Campbell grand, following the manufacturer's updated instructions (although the instrument had no duplex bars). We tried them on a few bass bichords and one steel unison. We found that, although the devices effectively reduce or eliminate false beats as advertised, they do so at the slight expense of tone and sustain in the bass. In the steel strings, there seemed to be no pronounced effect.
Our next meeting will be on November 14th at Gary Hammond's home. Isaac Sadigursky will present his program on removing and repairing broken screws and t-nuts.
