Last month, "The Donald" (aka Don Mannino) presented his condensed yet comprehensive class, "Concert Piano Service." He spoke about the importance of knowing the venue, the artist, and the program, as well as the piano. Lighting must be considered as the lights affect the piano's climate; try to have the stage lights set as they will be for the concert at least 90 minutes before tuning the piano. Obvious problems such as broken strings must be dealt with immediately, so as to allow time to tune and re-tune several times. Deal with regulation and voicing adjustments as well as tuning. Preferably, you will be able to work on the piano before rehearsal then consult with the artist after rehearsal to be able to make any adjustments and fine tuning prior to the concert. Remain on hand, if at all possible, through the concert in case something needs tending to at intermission. Interspersed through the lecture were Don's stories of his own concert prep experiences. Thanks very much, Mannino-San, for an entertaining evening!
Movie night! In November, we invite members to come see the film, "Note by Note, The Making of Steinway L1037.” This 2006 documentary follows the making of a concert grand from forest floor to concert hall. The film has found its way into the hearts of many, especially piano technicians.
We will also be discussing plans for the December Holiday Party; so please get your voting done early and come to the movies with us!
