Our November meeting was held at Gene Korolev's restoration operation organization. His establishment is set up in three sections: a showroom, shop and upstairs storage area. In the showroom we were able to view and play a Steinway model A that Gene restored to an extreme that has to be seen to be appreciated. The case is covered in a very aesthetic design of over 100,000 sparkles that look like diamonds. Each one was put in the case by hand. The piano played very well and had a wide tonal range. It would take considerable space in this newsletter to convey a description that is worthy of the piano. So you should just traipse over there and see it for yourself. Gene gave a technical briefing covering various aspects of restoration, hammer hanging, pin block drilling, and other topics. Each thing that he covered included demonstration of the tools he has invented and constructed to make his work easier. His jigs for hanging hammers and drilling pin blocks are the most advanced I have seen. His set-up for restringing a grand is unlike any I have seen. He even has a grand piano rotisserie machine (of his own design and manufacture) that grabs a grand piano and turns it upside down or anywhere in between and can raise it up or down as well. His clever device for moving heavy items into the upstairs storage area without an elevator is an Egytpian's dream with its clever use of leverage. Near the end of the presentation Mrs. Kasimoff asked how he keeps the place so clean. Gene said, "I have ventilation." Then he opened the large panels at the back of the shop and moved two large rolling filters across the opening, turned on a large fan and showed how simply blowing dust off the surfaces of the shop could suck all the particulate into the filters. His remarkable ability to solve mechanical problems, invent solutions and machine high tech gizmos makes it crystal clear that his name, Gene, is short for Genius.

Isaac Agraffsky provided a delicious dessert that I ate more of than I should have.

Our December party will be held at Franco's Precision Piano Services on December 19 at 5:00 pm. Please bring appetizers and beverages. We'll take care of the main dishes, and Fabrizio is bringing his well known and extremely delicious Vanishing Tiramisu of the Ever Expanding Waistline. Be there or be square.

One more thing: Mark your calendars for Monday, January 16, 2017 (Martin Luther King Day) for a special all-day "Multi-Chapter" meeting to be held at Keyboard Concepts in Santa Monica. Special guest speakers will include Ferdinand Bräu, Ray Chandler and Bill Brandom.
