SANTA BARBARA CHAPTER

June Meeting: (2nd Monday)
Date: Monday, June 12, 2017
Time: 7:00 pm
Location: Home of Dennis Schwendtner
2220 Channing Way
Santa Barbara 93109

In May the Santa Barbara Chapter welcomed our newest member, Benjamin Sanchez, who serves the Lompoc area!

Our meeting featured a characteristically robust technical discussion including reasons and solutions for tight center pins; how home construction materials may hold moisture or heat and therefore help or hinder tuning stability; success at using PitchLocks to resolve minor harmonic issues in bass bichords; and the use of various levers, positions, and techniques particularly for tuning jumpy pins.

We also discussed the need to be attentive and diligent with assessments of the piano's needs so that there are fewer "surprise" increases, and to be more formal with bidding jobs based on what the client expresses their needs to be and what other information indicates the level of service and quality they expect. We touched on the pitfalls inherent in email-only communications, while recognizing that there are many ways to do business, all of which can be successful.

For our program, Dennis Ashly and Evan Austin shared pictures and notes from the SoCal Seminar they attended in March in Riverside.

Our next meeting will be on Monday June 12 at 7:00 pm at the home of Dennis Schwendtner in Santa Barbara, where our program will be "Piano MacGyver!" In what ways have you modified or repurposed tools, either for use in piano service or to accomplish multiple functions? What have you invented on the fly? Bring your best custom tools or stories to share!
