Last month, we combined our meeting with Orange County because of the rare appearance by John Patton who has been working in Shanghai these past 11 years as President of Boston & Essex pianos. Little did we know at the time we announced the meeting that John is now a member of the Los Angeles Chapter and will hopefully be more accessible to us all. Welcome, John!
He will be reprising his program in November (on our regular 3rd Monday of the month) at the Pasadena Steinway Gallery. Mark your calendars - Monday, November 20th, 6:00 pm.
As long as you have your calendars out, in October, Don Mannino will present "Grand Damper System Repair and Regulation." Don will unravel the mysteries of servicing damper systems in Kawai grand pianos and other similarly designed pianos. He will demonstrate damper tray block replacement and service, regulating the damper lift from the key and from the pedal, regulating the sostenuto, plus much more! Don will even include demonstration of trimming trichord wedges to reduce noise when lifting. If you've had difficulties working on grand dampers, don't miss this class!
September is "back to school" month and even though many schools are starting earlier in August, it's time to come and share what you learned this summer. Hopefully, if you attended the National Convention in St. Louis, you learned a lot. We will also hear from several of our members about how they got started in this business. Some apprenticed with a mentor, some went to school (North Bennet Street, Florida State University, Western Ontario, Cal Arts Wing Nuts), and a few are still trying to figure it out. We have several new members who are investigating this profession. We all started somewhere. Maybe we can help them find their path.
