ORANGE COUNTY CHAPTER
October Meeting: Annual Tool Auction
Date: Saturday October 21, 2017
Time: 1:00 pm (sellers)
2:00 pm (buyers)
Location: Episcopal Church of the
Messiah
614 North Bush Street, Santa Ana
Greetings to all Southern California piano technicians and readers of the PTG Southern California Newsletter.
Last month Melissa was able to talk David Reed of Kawai into doing a chapter
meeting for us.
David hauled in a bunch of power tools to give us a demo on
how to modify your tools. A common frustration of piano technicians is that the
tools we buy from the supply houses don't always do their jobs that well. In
many cases, the tools work much better if they are modified or customized for
their specific uses. Armed with two grinders, a buffing wheel, and a belt
sander, David started out doing some tweezers he likes to use for key leveling.
While grinding and buffing he explained why they work better when he fixes them.
During the meeting he completed at least four or five tools in a relatively
short time. He modified a Capstan tool, Key spacer, Coil Lifter and a screw
driver. Each tool came out looking better than new. David also explained how to
use the grinder properly, with several safety tips. Thank you, David, for a
great demonstration of tool modification, and thanks to Kim's Piano for hosting
a great meeting.
Our Annual Tool Auction is Saturday, October 21. Rumor has it there will be some techs there selling a bunch of stuff. We have been having it in the basement of the Episcopal Church of the Messiah for three years now, I think. Since moving to Saturday it has been a smashing success and a lot of fun. Technicians from across the southland convene for a wild time and some good deals, too. So come on down to this convenient location in downtown Santa Ana near the Orange Crush where the 5, 57, and 22, meet. Parking is available across the street at Hands Together Pre School. See the next page for more details.
Hope to see you there!
Orange County Chapter Annual Tool Auction
Saturday,
October 21, 2017
2:00 - 5:00 pm
Episcopal Church of the Messiah - Parish
Hall
614 N. Bush St., Santa Ana 92701
A piano tilter to be auctioned off! Give away items available! A retiring technician dissolving his tool collection! Don't forget your checkbooks!
All technicians are invited to participate as buyers and sellers. The doors will be open by 1:00 pm for set-up. Buyers should arrive by 2:00 to peruse what's available. Bidding will begin promptly at 2:30.
The Tool Auction benefits the seller and the hosting Orange County Chapter. Here's how it works: The contributor and the chapter split the income for an item or group of items 50/50. In the event that an item has a minimum bid, the minimum bid amount goes to the contributor and any additional amount goes to the OC chapter until the minimum bid is doubled, then the 50/50 ratio is reinstated.
To illustrate: A technician brings in a tuning hammer with a high retail value and doesn't want to part with it unless he can take home $100. Bidding opens at $100. If the hammer sells for $100 this entire amount goes to the technician. If it sells for $150: $100 goes to the technician and $50 goes to the OC chapter. If it sells for $200: $100 goes to the technician and $100 goes to the OC chapter. If it sells for $210: the technician gets $105 and the OC chapter gets $105.
Light snacks and beverages will be on hand.
