When I arrived early for the October meeting I thought I would be first to arrive; but Isaac beat me to it. As I entered Pierre's Fine Pianos, I saw a man tuning one of Pierre's fine Kawai grands. I had never seen him before and found out when I talked to him that he was none other than Don Mannino, the traveling piano tech for Kawai. He was tuning the piano he would use in his presentation on grand dampers. This tech class was just what I needed. It included a handout from Kawai America and covered such things as noisy damper trays, trouble shooting alignment, trichord felt trimming and bending damper wires. There was a good turnout for this meeting.

We would like to extend a big thank you to Pierre and his wife Wen, as well as Raul, who stayed for the whole meeting and set up the space for us. The pizza was great. A big Thank You to Don for making the trip and for his great presentation.

Our next meeting will be at the Steinway Gallery in Pasadena. John Patton, Vice-President of Steinway & Sons and President of Boston and Essex Piano Operations, will be giving a presentation on Boston and Essex, focusing on the designs, materials, features, and technical improvements through the years. The discussion will include changes and improvements in the pianos, where they come from, Steinway's involvement in the factories for quality purposes, and how decisions about the pianos are made. John has lived in Asia for over ten years and will share in-department knowledge of what is going on in the world of pianos there.

Please be aware that the Steinway Gallery is in the middle of Old Town Pasadena and parking can be difficult. Please come early and car pool if you can.
