In October South Bay Chapter member Don Mannino gave his class, “Octave and Unison Tuning: Fundamentally Explained.” Don demonstrated how coincident partials are used to tune. We looked at wave spectrometry of tones such as sine, sawtooth, square, and triangle waves. It has been 40 years since I used a synthesizer, and it was interesting to see graphic demonstrations of those sounds. When I was in a band in 1967, using a fuzz tone, I had no idea that was a sawtooth wave. Great! The relationship of partials, and their connecting nodes, is what gives us beats. It behooves the technician to analyze the harmonic series, familiarize oneself with it, and use this to know what we are listening for. The demonstration on octave and unison tuning was excellent and included hammer technique for the high treble. Evenness in tone from note to note was a major theme. For our November program we will have an overview of David Stanwood's Balance Weight System of key balancing. Frictional and inertial considerations will be touched upon, but the main emphasis will be upon Steve Schell's practical and efficient method of putting the theory into practice with his stacked weight method of actually balancing an action without ponderous calculations. So little tedium to endure with pie as the reward! Be there or be.... unbalanced!
