Greetings to all Southern California piano technicians and readers of the PTG Southern California Newsletter.
Last month we were lucky enough to have Kathy Smith for our monthly program. Kathy sort of has dual citizenship with the OC Chapter because she attends our meetings frequently, makes us coffee and brings some goodies too.
Kathy presented a class that focused on method and technique for performing certain tasks included in grand regulation. The steps and regulation procedures that we are all familiar with focused more on technique and how to achieve consistent results. Kathy has developed many helpful and time saving methods over the years. We were fortunate to get her decades of experience and know-how for our chapter meeting. In the hands-on, intimate setting with some handy tools and jigs, we witnessed how she approaches the many components of grand regulation. We focused on how to do it with time saving and consistent results. We talked a little about why we do it, too.
Our very own Melissa Weidner demonstrated Dale Irwin's mini belt sander for hammer filing. It is a pretty cool tool and Melissa expertly filed some hammers before our very eyes. We got to try it out on our own after the meeting. So if you need any hammers filed you know who to call. Just kidding of course, call Dale Irwin and get one for yourself. If you missed this meeting you should’a been there because you missed a good one.
Our thanks to Field's piano for letting us use the store for our meeting. We all missed our dear friend Steve Likens.
Next month we will be at Keyboard Concepts for a class called "Effective Efficiency in Four hours." This class will focus on reconditioning a piano in a four hour time slot. David Durben from Yamaha will bring Atsushi "Ace" Udai, a top Yamaha concert technician with him. This should make for an interesting and informative meeting. Hope to see you there!!
