WestPac was in April, and Lisa Weller reported back highlights from some classes such as: Don Mannino's “The Sound of Your Tuning,” which touched on many key concepts of how we tune; expanded 4ths, contracted 5ths, and unisons that are 'just past' a perfectly still unison. Jack Stebbins explained how to “Let the Piano Tell You” where it wants to be tuned. Jack’s time tested method of telling us what he's going to tell us, then telling it to us, then telling us what he told us, turns the light on for everyone in the room. Bruce Stevens and David Vanderlip taught “The Grand Balancing Act,” an all day seminar that demystified action weigh off and provided an innovative, easy-to-use protocol to gain consistent results. Ryan Ellison, along with Bill Brandom, taught the class “Yamaha Hybrids: It's just Routine!”- and for those who missed this one, you're in luck, as he will be giving a reprise of this for our combined meeting this month!
For the May South Bay Chapter meeting Bruce Grimes shared his experiences traveling around the world by way of bicycle, making his way as a piano technician. Truly amazing! Thank you, Bruce! I'm sure we all have that wanderlust, but few of us have acted on it to the degree that you have. Highlights include making his own tuning hammer out of parts from the hardware store, tuning in Greece at Athens University and splicing 8 bass strings, in Jerusalem , Israel - sleeping on the balcony of the piano showroom, riding the bike from Jerusalem to Cairo, arriving in India and getting in with the Siik community - becoming a physics teacher there, traveling to Cambodia and evading land mines buried there, living in Madan Indonesia and starting a school of piano technology there, among many, many other things. He flew from Singapore to LAX in '91 and rode his bike on the strand back to the house in Palos Verdes. Thank you, Bruce!
The PTG National Convention is going to be held in Lancaster, Pennsylvania , July 11-14, and will be an amazing event! More info can be found here: http://my.ptg.org/2018convention/home
For the June chapter meeting we will be teaming up with the LA Chapter for "Yamaha Hybrids: It's just routine!" presented by Ryan Ellison. Did you know that 20% of Yamaha acoustic piano sales are electronically-equipped?! In light of this statistic we ask the question, "Why do acoustic piano technicians shy away from hybrid service?" In this class, we demonstrate Yamaha's current products, discuss how hybrid service is profitable and easy, and give you the key to unlock your own hybrid business.
We will meet on Monday, June 18 at 7:00 pm at Keyboard Concepts Sherman Oaks.
