SANTA BARBARA CHAPTER

November Meeting: (2nd Monday)
Date: Monday, November 12, 2018
Time: 7:00 pm
Location: To be Determined

The Santa Barbara Chapter met on October 8th. We got some updated information on official IRS tax-deduction appraisals of pianos, and have initial information about a Feurich piano with a fourth pedal that allows all dampers to be lifted yet still damp the note played. We had some discussion on how to deal with customers who push you beyond your normal schedule or who try to barter or negotiate.

Our technical session addressed field string repairs, massaging wire to get better tone, and decreasing downbearing using punchings at the hitch pin in a piano where the bass and treble are wildly opposing at each tuning.

For our program, Jim Connelly presented his experience from the Yamaha Performance Piano Service Seminar by Dave Durbin and Greg Durobaum where "tuning for projection" was the focus.
Jim played a couple of 2 string unisons to subjectively test the theory of tuning for projection. The test was a blind vote and there was never a unanimous agreement as to which pair of unisons were localized to a particular sounding location. However, there did seem to be a consensus that there was positioning, or location characteristics based on the unison tuning. It may be that there is a "window" of tuning a unison that can be optimized for projection. Jim will keep honing the techniques he learned from Yamaha and present at a future meeting.

Our next meeting will be Monday, November 12th at 7:00 pm. The location and program are yet to be determined.
