Location: Kawai America

In February the South Bay Chapter met for a presentation by Michael Cahn entitled, "First Time Service- Setting Yourself, and the Piano, Up for Success." It was warmly received. Focal points included deep cleaning, smaller repairs & UFOs [unidentified foreign objects? ed.], pitch raise tuning and client relations. The integrative approach to the topic led the chapter into interesting discourse. David Reed recounted a tale from the lone star state wherein the unsuspecting technician discovered the source of the sticky key was not a pencil, but a live rattlesnake stretched out along the back of the keys, perhaps awaiting lunch! Bruce Grimes recounted the practice of playing the piano as it lay without removing pictures or opening to identify extraneous sounds, making strides with regulation broad strokes such as shimming up the hammer rest rail and taking up the lost motion, as well as seating strings in the high tenor. In the spirit of the evening, Ryan Ellison bequeathed a treasure trove of tools and supplies to attendees. These tools were once bequeathed to him by Donald Price and his wife, Loretta, from Colorado, and Ryan has 'payed it forward' breathing life into the legacy of inspiring and empowering new technicians, right up to the present here in the South Bay Chapter. Thank you, Ryan, for your very generous gift to our membership. It is valued and appreciated!
A special thank you goes out to Bruce Grimes for your service as chapter secretary and for sharing your immeasurable wisdom gained as a traveling piano technician by bicycle around the globe. We wish you all of the best on your move to San Marcos, Texas where pianos await your skillful hand and thoughtful ears. Bruce can be kept in touch with via email at farmer_g_iv19131864@yahoo.com
