The LA Chapter had no meeting in March, but we will meet on Monday, April 15 at Pierre’s Fine Pianos. Arrive at 6:00 for some food and discussion with people who share your reality. Then at 7:00 pm, Randy Morton of Pacific Piano Supply will give a class about action replacement - some difficult and obsolete piano actions such as older Steinway uprights and brass flange Chickerings. He will also do a short section on how Imadegawa hammers are made, derived from a Japanese television show that came to Pacific Piano for the filming of a segment. This video of how hammers are made should be of great interest to you. I have seen it and learned some things I never knew before about piano hammers.
For those of you who missed the February meeting, here's a recap from the
master tuner himself:
A fairly decent sized group of determined piano tuners
and technicians met at the source for Yamaha Pianos in Sherman Oaks, Keyboard
Concepts. I hesitate to say just how good this presentation by Mark Greisen was.
The first thing we learned was how to pronounce his last name. It's just like
the "ei" in Steinway. Then he rambled on about various ways to increase one's
certainty in aural tuning. If I hadn't been the one giving the talk I would go
on and on about how great it was. As it was, only two people were observed
fighting to stay awake. Mark swears that if he is ever asked back to do this
again he will spend the entire meeting showing how he sets a temperament by ear.
Take note, Brooks. In closing I would like to say it's really a lot of fun
writing the Newsletter and thank you to Adam and Joey and the entire staff at KC
for accommodating us on short notice.
