Since we missed the deadline for the newsletter last month, we have a little catching up to do. Here we are:
In August, a small but mighty crew enjoyed a BBQ at David Andersen's home. Great discussions, great food, and the making of good memories were all present. David, thank you again for hosting us.
In September, we were treated to an overview of plastics by Don Jackson. He
taught us about characteristic differences, logistics of what to use for a
variety of situations and why. We discussed adhesives and lubricants for many
types of materials. Also, he played his plastic trombone for us!
Don Jackson
is a graduate of Cal State Long Beach with a BA in Music. He has been involved
in the plastics industry for over 41 years, working with Hewlett-Packard, 3M and
many other companies. He has worked on parts ranging from medical to music,
computer to recreation and has created thousands of formulations to solve
customer issues.
This month, our meeting will be a week later than usual because our normal night is a Jewish holiday. Blaine Hebert’s presentation will be a reassessment of unison tuning technique and tuning theory in the treatment of false beats. Aside from occasionally seating strings at the bridge, the bridge/string contribution to tone is often ignored during tuning. We will examine theories of the causes of false beats and the various treatments commonly used and suggest a simple and effective technique for dealing with false beats. Blaine is a third generation piano technician and began his education at his grandfather’s knee. He has serviced pianos across Southern California for 44 years.
