Los Angeles Chapter
No meeting this month
In our last meeting Mark and Dawn Purney showed us the nuts and bolts of Supply88, their specialty tool company that manufactures innovative devices made specifically for piano technicians.
Supply88 started with some rubber tubing "tires" and a desire to remedy the explosion of piano wire that often accompanies cheap piano wire reels. The prototypes evolved, and eventually a 3D printer was brought into the fold, yielding the modern wire tires that are currently available on the site. Years later, the Purney's garage is now outfitted with five 3D printers, welding and other equipment, and it turns out scores of inventions.
Mark and Dawn (and their shop cat Toby) walked us through many of these tools, from the wire storage solutions that helped them get off the ground, to a number of creative, task-specific tools like string stabilizers, voicing tool covers and coil formers. We also discussed the importance of diversification of a technician's career in helping reduce fatigue, possible injury and boredom. The Purney's side business has allowed them to realize these benefits while staying closely tethered to the piano technician community.
