Guest Speaker: Mark Cerisano, RPT from Toronto
Mark Cerisano will speak about stability from the point of view of non-speaking length (NSL) tension analysis. NSL tension analysis allows him to describe what is happening 100% of the time when a stability technique works. And when it doesn't work, it allows him to figure out what to do about it to get it to work. It also allows one to get and test a stable tuning without using hard blows. Finally, he is able to quickly make small changes in pitch while still producing a stable tuning.
Mark Cerisano is a Registered Piano Technician who has devoted his life to improving aural piano tuning techniques. He has taken his mechanical engineering background and used it to test a lot of assumptions we have as aural piano tuners; assumptions that sometimes lead us down a rabbit hole. He has used his education background to develop explanations of concepts that make understanding how to tune a piano aurally simple to understand. He has written five books and had four articles published in the Journal.
March's meeting featured Nowell Gatica, Chief Concert Technician at Steinway
Hall, Dallas. Nowell discussed and unpacked the core traits of an effective
concert technician: competency, confidence, humility, and flexibility. In
addition to having the technical skills, tools, and parts, we talked about the
importance of the concert tech's flexibility, people skills, and time
management. Some of the big take aways were the emphasis on integrity and being
calm, collected, and confident, thus putting the performer at ease. The
presentation was recorded, so if you missed it, you can view it at this link:
