Our May meeting was held at Hollywood Piano where Ed Tomlinson discussed speed and stability in tuning. Ed shared his frustrations and eventual success at setting an aural temperament for the RPT exams, and talked about making quick decisions and not over-thinking as we work. He encouraged younger technicians to think about speed and the total time taken to tune a piano.

Ed shared techniques for improving our speed such as limiting our movements, finding the balance point on our levers and the ability to move lightly and efficiently from one pin to the next. Coupled with speed is the paramount requirement of stability. Ed discussed techniques with the lever, tensions left in the different string segments, and using tilt (flagpoling) to examine where we have left the pin.

This month Isaac Sadigursky is going to show his collection of tuning forks (some are very unique), give a brief history of how the tuning fork came to be, and how they can be used to teach hearing beats for aural tuning. Then a few short technicals.

Live feed presented on Zoom.  For the link, please contact Don Mannino.

General Announcements:

Tim Michaels has stepped down from his responsibilities as Treasurer and Secretary. We'd like to thank him for his outsized service while performing both of those roles. Eric Rautenberg will be taking over the role as treasurer and Robert Cope will be stepping up as Secretary.

We have tentatively planned a special SUMMER CELEBRATION to make up for the year-end parties robbed from us by Covid. Please plan on joining us at Franco's Precision Piano Services on Saturday, July 15th at 1:00 pm (10426 Magnolia Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 91601). More specifics to follow.

Finally, a note that our RPT chapter member Frank Strnad, completed his Ph.D. in musicology at Claremont Graduate University and graduated Summa cum Laude this May. Frank wishes to thank so many of you in our chapter and the Southern California region of PTG who were so supportive and encouraging to him in pursuing his doctorate. CONGRATULATIONS Frank!
