The Santa Barbara Chapter did not have a regular meeting in September, but we did gather to triage a dozen or so uprights that are used each October along State Street in Santa Barbara. In recent years this has been a fun and instructive (for newer members) field repairs crash course, as we have only a few hours to diagnose and repair these instruments to enable them to weather (literally) a month out on the streets as public use pianos. We encounter every issue you can imagine, from broken shanks and key sticks to damper/pedal problems, from broken strings to unglued hammer felt, from bridge issues to caster issues. It's fun to put that urgency on ourselves and practice quickly repairing the most egregious problems first, with the aim of making the pianos as playable as possible.
The next step will be the local artists coming in to customize each piano, then placement on the streets, and tuning. More info at pianosonstate.com
