South Bay's October meeting featured a Price is Right-style presentation from San Diego Chapter President RPT and American Society of Appraisers member, Brian Janey.
Brian explained the difference and purpose of appraising standards such as Fair Market Value, Market Value and Replacement Value. In his game-show style presentation, chapter members went head-to-head guessing the appraised value of real world pianos. Members estimated values of pianos new and old, large and small. In one instance a valuation was given for a Petrof grand piano of more than 200k!
Brian also explained the role of a piano technician in the work of piano valuations. He advised that piano technicians should stick to the business of condition evaluation and should understand when a technician's reputation can be damaged by venturing too far into appraisals.
The November program will be a a joint presentation by Carl Lieberman and Don Mannino with 2 topics:
- Carl Lieberman will discuss some new features of Reyburn Cybertuner

Carl and Don Mannino will share in a discussion of grand keyframe bedding,
comparing the use of the WN&G dial gauge with the traditional 'Thumping' method.
