December Winterfest: (2nd Tuesday)
Date: Tuesday, December 12, 2023
Time: 6:00 - 9:00 pm
Location: Kawai America
2055 E. University, Rancho Dominguez CA 90220

The November program was a joint presentation by Carl Lieberman and Don Mannino. Carl discussed some new features of Reyburn Cybertuner's "AI Mode" in development. Pianos have imperfect scale designs. Calculated tunings need some aural touch-up as inharmonicity jumps unpredictably from one note to another. Currently AI Mode fills the gap by taking up to 30 sample notes from E2 to A4. With those extra samples, AI Mode is able to significantly improve the tuning using aural tuning principles. The new AI Mode feature in development which Carl demonstrated streamlines sampling to a few notes near the bass/treble break, instead of sampling up to 30 notes - thereby allowing for quick and effective improvement to tunings.

Carl and Don shared a discussion of grand keyframe bedding, comparing the use of the WN&G dial gauge with the traditional 'Thumping' method. Carl focused on the simplicity and sensitivity of using WN&G key bedding tool. Don shared his 3 step procedure to eliminate knocking, create a positive feel in the action and to allow for stable regulation. Don demonstrated how resting one's foot on the pedals during keyframe bedding simulates the keybed flex that may occur when the pianist uses the pedals, thereby allowing for an even more effective bedding of the keyframe.

This year's 'Winterfest' celebration is coming on Tuesday, December 12 from 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm. We will be gathering at Kawai America, and we will be enjoying some wonderful piano music by pianists of the Gliadkovsky Family performing on the excellent Shigeru Kawai pianos!

We decided to try using an online sign-up site this year to allow you to sign up to bring food. Please send an email to Don Mannino to get the web address for the signup page.

You can choose your category of items to bring (appetizer, main course, side dish, dessert, or beverage). If all the slots have been taken when you go to sign up or if you have problems using the web site, please write to Don Mannino to let us know what you'd like to bring. We will let you know if things in your category are overloaded and see if there are other areas where more is needed.

We usually have a large turnout for this event, and quite a few members from other chapters often join us. It will be a fun night of food, music, and camaraderie!
