Last month the South Bay Chapter celebrated the holiday season during its annual potluck party at Kawai complete with friends, music and tamales! It was wonderful to share comradery with our piano trade members.

We were extremely fortunate to be joined by the esteemed professor of piano at Saddleback College, Prof. Kirill Gliadkovsky. Kirill brought us stories and the music of George Gershwin. He performed a fabulous set of Gershwin piano works which included "The Man I Love," "I Got Rhythm" and an uproarious finale of Gershwin's own piano-only version of "Rhapsody in Blue". The Shigeru Kawai concert instrument (expertly prepared by our own David Reed) resounded beautifully under Prof. Gliadkovsky's masterful touch. It was a magical musical moment… one for the record books, to be sure.

In January the South Bay and Los Angeles Chapters will hold a combined meeting at Kawai’s headquarters. Start off the new year as we join together. Los Angeles will host a pizza dinner before the presentation; but stick around for pie! Kathy Smith will be our presenter, speaking on “All about Jacks, Reps, and Springs.” She will focus on whippen specifications and the importance of regulation steps pertaining to the whippen. This program will tie into the series of regulation steps that we started last year.

Kathy is an RPT and professor of piano technology at the Piano Technicians Guild home office where she teaches a 3-day intensive class on "the good old" 37 steps.

We look forward to seeing you on January 9!
