We had a great turnout for our meeting in September. Twenty chapter members showed up for an evening spent taking a deep dive on unison tuning. There was a good discussion on all of the different obstacles to good unisons, and the evening ended with a few volunteers willing to tune a unison and have it assessed by a committee of three fellow technicians.
In October we are looking forward to a presentation by Franco Skilan. He will take us through a deep evaluation of a potential rebuild:
How would YOU advise your client?
What are the pitfalls, advantages, options, and feasibility of restoring/repairing a piano that has lived a long life, and has seen better days?
We will evaluate a 123 year old Steinway Model B, exactly as we would find it in a client's home, studio, church, or concert hall.
Each person will study the piano as-is, including pulling the action and taking notes about the condition of the instrument currently.
We will have no open discussion during this evaluation period. After we have all made an assessment of the piano, we will compare our thoughts and observations of the piano as a group. This will be a chance to share our perspectives, debate, and agree or disagree on the type of advice we would give to a client.
Do we advise them to do minor repairs and let the instrument limp along, get rid of it, donate it, send it to the Steinway Factory to restore it, or recommend a local rebuilder?
Giving your client the best advice for their particular situation is crucial to your reputation and obligation as a hired consultant.
With this particular piano we will be able to move forward with the instrument over the coming year and watch and even participate in the agreed upon work as a chapter. An exciting opportunity!
