Hello SD County Chapter,
Our chapter received an old 6’ Schimmel grand piano as a donation which we’ll use for training in a series of Saturday technical meetings at Brian Janey’s shop. The intent is to give our members hands on opportunity as we bring the piano into better condition and later sell it to fund our MConnect technician mentoring program.
The first of these sessions will take place on Saturday, Oct 26th from 9am to 12pm and feature Mark Adams, RPT leading a session titled, “Evaluating a piano prior to purchase.” The class will cover items to look for and ensure prospective buyers are aware of in consulting with them, how to do an inspection and things that techs often miss when looking at a piano for a client. Many thanks in advance to Mark for signing up to lead a class for the chapter.
At the request of newer members of our chapter, a second topic we’ll address on Oct. 26th is what seasoned pros carry with them in their primary tool kit. Seasoned techs attending are encouraged to bring their kit for show and tell. What are the items that you’d turn your car around and drive back to your shop or home for if you realized they were not with you during your commute to a client appointment?
Heads up that for November we have a special day planned that will feature our “OG Tuning School” in the morning for those looking for hands-on tuning technique instruction and a “Piano Hospital Deployment” in the afternoon for our techs looking for in-the-field piano repair experience. Please RSVP to Brian Janey if you plan on attending either session so we can prepare accordingly. Spots for the “OG Piano Tuning School” may be limited. There will be a one hour lunch break between events from noon to 1pm. Those attending either or both events are welcome to join in the lunch break period. The Piano Hospital crew will then start their session collectively working on an older Kawai grand that needs cleaning, polishing, hammer shaping, voicing, etc.
