At September's chapter meeting, David Reed from Kawai shared his insights on aural tuning in the upper and lower octaves. David called up his 40-plus years of experience as he shared his tuning techniques in the highest and lowest sections of the piano, followed by Q & A and helpful discussion of aural tuning techniques and challenges, and David's method of setting a temperament. During his talk, David introduced the Defebaugh tuning sequence which drove a lot of discussion amongst members. Many thanks to David for his superb and enlightening tips.
In next month's meeting we get to the heart of the matter of aural temperament tuning with a repeat presentation of Ryan Ellison's March 2023 seminar, "The Roadmap," a 3-step circular temperament pattern based on 4ths and 5ths which is taught in many piano manufacturers' factory training. The Roadmap outlines a temperament pattern utilizing slow-beating "tuning" intervals and fast-beating "test" intervals. We'll discuss the differences between temperaments utilizing fast-beating and slow-beating tuning intervals and will cap it off with live demonstrations of temperament tuning.
