Hello San Diego Chapter members,
We have a rare chapter technical coming up on August 9th: Bill Shull of Period Piano Center in Redlands is going to lead us through all-day seminar on Chickering and Steinway history!
A note about the class from our chapter president, Brian Janey: "Bill has done these programs nationally at PTG conventions and conferences and at various music museums. It should be quite an interesting trek understanding the personalities that shaped the American piano manufacturing business and the history of engineering designs created we see every day and wonder "who thought that up?" The stories and circumstances are entertaining!
Bill is writing a comprehensive history of the Steinway piano which includes a technical anthology of all early Steinways, based on many years of forensic documentation of Steinway pianos. He has begun to research and document the Chickering piano with the same objective. Bill provides housing, conservation, maintenance, performance, study and teaching opportunities for and on the instruments in his expansive collection at Period Piano Center.
This will be quite an opportunity to gather some information to educate your clients about various design elements in the every ubiquitous piano." – Brian Janey
