The Santa Barbara Chapter met in May at Ian Schafer's workshop at UCSB! It was a treat to take in not only another technician's workspace, but a university shop as well. We discussed chapter officers, delegates to the upcoming convention, and PTG membership in general.
Ian showed us a field string replacement technique that doesn't require making a dummy coil, and we got to check out several restringing jobs that he has going on right now. We also looked over a spreadsheet document that Ian uses to categorize and assess the university's inventory of pianos, what work they need, and what work has been done, as well as pricing for various parts, which helps not only to organize the work flow, but in making accurate/realistic pitches to decision-makers.
For general technical discussion we touched on topics such as products and techniques for getting things to stick together and unstick from each other, and ways to align jacks under butts or knuckles (and why they might be misaligned).
Our next meeting is Monday June 8, 2026 at 7:00 pm, likely at the Piano Kitchen in Carpinteria, though that location and any program are TBD.
